When we think of online students, we often conjure up images of laptops, lattes, and lonely souls huddled in solitude. But let’s hit pause on that cliché reel.
The 3 Ls: Laptops, Lattes, and Lonely
- Laptops: Yes, online education involves screens—laptops, tablets, even smartphones. But it’s more than just hardware; it’s a gateway to knowledge, connection, and empowerment.
- Lattes: Ah, the trusty coffee mug! Universally held by students, whether they’re in a bustling café or their cozy home office. But what’s in that mug? Ambition, determination, and maybe a dash (or more) of caffeine.
- Lonely: Online students aren’t solitary figures; they’re often part of a vibrant community. They’re juggling work, family, and studies—like real-life superheroes of their own lives.
The Real Heroes: Online Students
- The Professionals: Picture an online student in a virtual meeting, toggling between analyzing spreadsheets, talking to success coaches and faculty, and learning new skills. They’re not just learning; they’re leveling up their careers and lives.
- The Parents: These students are masters of multitasking. They’re packing lunchboxes, coaching soccer, planning vacations, and parent-ubering to gymnastics. Their superpower? Balancing it all.
- The Community Leaders: Online students aren’t just learners; they’re leading community projects, advocating for change, and making an impact beyond the classroom. And bringing this experience back to the classroom.
Our Role: The Alfreds
As educators, we’re not the protagonists; we’re the trusted contributor—the Alfreds to their Batmans. Our job? To provide the knowledge, tools, guidance, and encouragement they need to soar.
Coffee Shops and Connectivity
Fun fact: I penned this article in a coffee shop surrounded by traditional students. Lattes flowed, laptops hummed, and conversations buzzed. Turns out, tech and coffee unite all learners, whether online or offline.
Let’s Rewrite the Narrative
So, let’s ditch the lonely-island imagery. Instead, let’s celebrate the online student experience—the late-night breakthroughs, the virtual high-fives, and the resilience that defines them. Let’s celebrate their accomplishments outside as well as inside of the classroom. Let’s show these images in our marketing and communications. They’re not just students; they’re heroes in progress.
To the Online Student: You’re Our Superstar
Next time you see an online student, imagine their cape billowing in the digital wind. Because they’re not just learning; they’re rewriting their destiny—even if they have a laptop and a latte.
Feel free to share this revamped perspective on LinkedIn, and let’s champion our students together!
